GAINING MOMENTUM
EMPIRE TRADE DRIVE CANADIAN ACTIVITY OTTAWA, November 1. Speaking at Winnipeg on Friday, the Prime Minister, Mr. Mackenzie King, made the following reference to United States tariff revision : "There is a movement for effecting more in the way ol inter-Imperial trade, which from voluntary, as well as through Government agencies, has gathered momentum almost daily since the revision of the United States tariff began. Here we already see the extent to which every possibility of the revision of their tariff Dv the United States has served to bring home to the component parts of the British Empire the wisdom of securing within the Empire itself, with regard to any and every eventuality, as large a measure of inter-Imperial trade as may be possible. There seems little doubt that the Empire producers can supply vast quantities of goods now produced in the, United States. "If," ho added, Vthe tariff in the United States is' altered to affect any Canadian interests, the United States will surely recognise our right with respect to our tariff, so to legislate as to have regard for Canadian interests." COLONIAL WINES INCREASING POPULARITY LONDON, November 2. Mr. Noel Buxton, speaking at the Brewers' Exhibition luncheon, expressed the opinion that a, national guarantee would have a most beneficial effect on Britain's means of marketing. Concerning Empire trade, it was essential that the heart of the Empire should be sound. "Remember," he. said, "Empire trading begins at Home." The chairman, Mr. Dale, dec'ared that Empire wine was increasing in popularity. There were over 200 exhibits, which was most encouraging. "Cheap colonial wines," he said, "are rapidly gaining in popularity in the northern manufacturing areas, where the workers relish something with a kick in it. They prefer colonial wine to beer."
Colonial wines were served at the luncheon.
