MANY LABOR GAINS
ELECTIONS IN. ENGLAND COMMUNISTS FARE BADLY LONDON, Nov. 2. .Strenuous efforts of Laborites to secure control of loeal government was again a feature of the municipal elections in 300 cities and boroughs in England'and Wales, excluding London, in which polling took place yesterday. The results . available early this morning show substantial Labor gains, though not so sweeping as they anticipated. Several Mayors lost their seats to Laborites, including the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, and the Mayors of Sunderland and Guildford. There were seven Labor gains in Salford and six in Sunderland. Labor already rules 23 towns and has now secured majorities for the first .time in Bradford and Northampton. The Communists fared badly, their candidate at Burnley polling 27 votes, at'Bury only 07, and at Leeds ,54 and 72. • The Conservatives in Oldham won back three seats from Labor. The total number of candidates throughout the countryside was 2031. The Laborites had the largest number of unopposed candidates, 117, compared with Conservatives 81. Liberals .'',7. Independents 35. Revised figures are: — Conservatives, 11 gains, 70 losses. Liberals, 13 gains, 2D losses. Labor .112 gains, .12 losses. Independents, 16 gains, 32 losses.
