RELIGION IN SCHOOLS
ESSENTIAL TO EDUCATION (Per Press Association.) HAMILTON, last night, A striking statement in favor of religious education was niade by Bishop Cherrington at a garden party to-day in connection with the laying of the foundation stone of the new Anglican diocesan school for girls. His Lordship' paid a high tribute to the Roman Catholic Church's educational efforts. He said ; "Education without a religious basis is- a miserable affair and cannot be called education in the true sense. All parents have the right to expect that their children shall be taught their own religion by teachers who helieve it. We of the Church of England are far behind in this re- • speet, but aro going our best to wipe out our past neglect by establishing diocesan schools. I look for the day when wo will be able in each of our parishes to have at least One primary school where the teaching of the church can be fully given. All honor to tho church in tliis country, which has that as its' aim. May we follow in its steps. Meantime, we are making a beginning.";
