OBITUARY

\MR, D, F. LAURENSON (Special to tin* Herald.) OiIRISTOHURCTI, this day. Students of Canterbury College ami other friends regret the untimely death of Mr. Donald Farquharson Laurenson, youngest son of Mrs. Laurenson and the late Air. George Laurenson, formerly M.l*. for Lyttelton. He was a brother of Dr. .1. T. Laurenson, the champion tennis player. Hu was 2a years old, and received his education at St. Andrew’s College, where lie was specially prominent in athletics and boxing.' Going to Canterbury College he took up the study of law, and was a law clerk with the firm of Raymond, Stringer, Hamilton, and Donnelly. Mr. Laurenson took an active part in university life.

MR. MATHEW JOHNSON The deatli of Mr. Mathew .Johnson took place at his residence in Hastings on Monday, after a long.and painful illness home with singular courage and patience. lie had fallen ill some two years ago, and until the time of his death had been living in retirement.

ll(> was horn near Newcastle (England) (D years ago, and arrived with his parent's at Dunedin when lie was 11 years of age. Since lie was 21 he had been living in Hawke’s Bay, having gone to Hastings 40 years ago to take charge of Blythe’s brunch shop at Hastings. Subsequently lie bought out the Hastings branch, and bad been in it ever since.

When he was 28 years of age he married Miss Matilda Ann Kcssell, having one son, Mr. Walter .John Johnson, of Sydney, and two daughters (Mrs. W.' M. Will, of Hastings, and Mrs. S. F, Jones, of Hastings. The dcaced was Deputy-Mayor of Hastings until lie was forced by illhealth to retire, and was also a member of the 11.8. Licensing Bench.. He was one of the original trustees of the Hastings Citizens’ Band, one of the original trustees of the Hastings Sthrr-Bowkett Building Society, a foundation and life member of the 11.18. Trotting Club, and for many years a member of the 11.8. Jockey Club.

Mr. Johnson was known to the pakeha as a man of the highest honor, and to the Maori he was equally respected as one who was ever jealous of their rights. Maori members of the community had a particularly high regard for him, for he had unostentatiously served them in many ways. I’akeha and Maori alike will equally mourn the loss of a splendid comrade and fellow-citizen.

Tare Poinpey, an old identity of Tangoio, passed away at Bay View recently. Deceased was one of the oldest natives oil the East Coast, believed to ho 98 years old. It was most interesting to listen to his recollections ol early days in Hawke’s Bay. The funeral took place on Sunday and was attended by natives from To Haroto, iMohaka and Ornahu.
