RESISTED ARREST
MAN BEFORE COURT SUMMONS DISLIKED (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Appearing for. a mechanic, Leonard Maugham, 56, who pleaded not guilty to resisting Detective Kano in the execution of ids duty, Mr. Sievwrigkfc suggested. that the police story of one man resisting three .burly constables was obsui'd, Detective Kane had given evidence that with Dfeteclive Robinson and Constable Nalder they went to a' house at Lower Halt for tlie purpose of executing a. warrant to arrest- tho accused. On seeing them tlie accused, became very excited and told them to get out. Yylien told, tiiat they had a warrant, lie said : “Warrant or no warrant, you’re getting out,” and rushed at Detective Kane, appearing, to have a small pocket knife in liis hand. When caught by each arm by the other, two, lie resisted violently. A small dropped out of his hand. Ho was handcuffed and shown the warrant. 1
Mr. Siovwriglit gave another, version of the story, and. two women who live in - the house gave evidence. Tlie magistrate remarked that on two previous occasions Detective Kane had visited tho house to make nu|uinos iniu certain matters. This, it seemed, made the mind of tho accused inflamed. He thought that when the three officers went out to tlie, house on- this particular day they anticipated trouble. The fact that three went seemed to indicate that. Tlie magistrate thought tho defendant met the police with a certain amount- of resentment, and there was a struggle. He had come to tho conclusion that, the police told what was a Substantially accurate story. Maugham was fined £lO, in default 21 days, and on a charge of stealing radio apparatus of a total value of £2O lie was remanded to appear at Otaki on Friday.
