FIRE IN TOWN

DWELLING PARTLY BURNT Shortly before. 5.30 o'clock this morning the Fire Brigade was summoned to a tire in a live-roomed dwelling owned by Miss Buchanan and occupied by Mrs. .J. R, Quinn at 298 Aberdeen road. The flames had secured a firm hold when the brigade arrived, but splendid work on the part of the fire-lighters enabled the outbreak to bo confined to as small an area as possible. Tho washouse, separated from the house by a verandah, was gutted, while a small storeroom adjoining the washouse, the bathroom, and a portion of the rear wall of the dwelling were damaged. Tho attention of the brigade was directed towards saving the main build ing. The fire was binning fiercely in (he rear portion of the house when the (ire-fighters commenced operations, while the side of the building had caught alight as a result of the flames creeping along the verandah. By this time the lire had burnt into' the roof over tho washouse and verandah, and had reached the. bathroom, situated on the opposite side of the dwelling. The door leading into the kitchen was well alight also, though the progress of the flames was stopped at this stage. Alter some time the outbreak was extinguished, leaving the rear portion in ruins. It is understood 1 that the fire originated through a piece of lighted paper falling out from under the copper in the washouse, and setting alight to a heap of clothes which had been placed there in readiness to be washed. The bouse and contents were insured in the Victoria office.
