NEW SKI FIELD

"FINEST RUN IN THE WORLD" A new ski-ing expedition was accomplished in the Franz Josef Glacier region recently by Guide Frank Alack. After conducting a party on the way to The Hermitage, as far as Graham's Saddle, Guide Alack made the return journey on ski. Descending from Graham’s Saddle (8795 ft.) he crossed the huge snowfields of the Franz Josef to the south-west, and ascended and made a complete traverse of the Kaiser Frictz Range over Mounts Boon and Moltke, a height over 8000 ft. Finally he descended to the Defiance Hut (2000 ft). The ski run, Guide Alack states, was the most interesting and thrilling he has had in all his mountaineering experiences, and he. was very emphatic as to the wonderful possibilities of the Franz Josef region for ski-ing and winter sports. Guide Alack, accompanied by C. Jenson, made the first crossing of the Southern Alps on ski from the Franz Josef to The Hermitage last winter, and a few weeks ago, with T. Sheoran, he traversed both the Franz Josef and the Fox Glaciers on ski. This last run, however, owing to its altitude and length, he considers the finest in the world.
