(Herald Correspondent.) .Mrs. W. Clow, of Marino Parade, has left for Palmerston North to visit her brother, Mr. Lassen. —Mrs. Albert Middleton, of Tokomaru Bay, is on a visit to her husband’s sister, Mrs. J. Gordon, of McLean street. Mrs. Ramlose, sen., a lady well advanced in years, was admitted to the County Hospital on Thursday suffering from a fracture of the thigh, it is understood she sustained the injury through slipping off' a verandah at her residence. Mrs. Ramlose is reported to be progressing well. Mr. McNeil, business manager of the New Zealand railways, was a week-end visitor to Wairoa. —Mr. Baird, sen., is visiting Mr. and Mrs. D. Baird, of Marine Parade.—Mr. and Mrs. K. San - deman are staying with Mr. and Mrs.' 11. Crichton, of Clyde road. Wairoa lias been experiencing weather of a varying nature lately—one day being particularly tine, and another quite the reverse. A very cold snap, with heavy showers, commenced on Friday afternoon. iSo far, however, no setback to stock or fruit prospects has occurred, and the frosts have lost their destroying power on tender plants. The Wairoa cattle and horse fair will be held on October 4 and 5 respectively, i'lie entries are expected to be good. The approach of the cricket season is evident by the holding of the annual meetings. At the meeting of the Public Works Department Cricket Club t here was a good attendance of members and intending members. The officers were elected as follow: Patron, Mr. A. Daniels; president, Mr. R. Trevor Smith; secretary, Mr. J. McGregor; treasurer, Mr. A. Reeves. The season’s prospects appear bright, though the club has lost several good players. The Waihua Cricket Club’s annual meeting was held at Te Kumi, on the East Coast railway route. The following officers were elected : Patron : Mr. R. Trevor Smith; president, Air. A. Kirk; committee, Messrs. Weaver, Fayen, and Moran, in conjunction with the chairman, Mr. J. Foster, and the secretary, Mr. C. S. Gee; club captain, Mr. E. Fayen. At the latest social and euchre tournament in connection with the Maori Catholic Church, the winners in the "trd tournament were: Ladies, Airs. J. Finucane 1 Mrs. F. King 2; gentlemen, Mr.i T. Thompson 1, Mr. N. Mann 2. A number of minor competitions were played. The Wednesday afternoon basketball games resulted: Frasertown defeated Kiwi by seven goals to six. For the winners Mrs. R. Goldstono secured four goals and Aliss Lawton three; Miss Joyce King tossed four goals for the losers, and Misses AI. Jane and T. Bates one each. High School Old Girls defeated Wesley by eight goals to two. Miss I. Wright tossed five goals for the winners, Aliss Zena Adsett two, and Aliss S. Burridge one. For the losers, Misses M. Pearse and E. Haugliton each scored one goal. Primary heat High School A by four goals to two, the winners’ goals being tossed by Misses D. Haenga (3) and J. Unwin (1). Aliss L. Pakuku scored for High School.
