THE LAW OF PEACE

PROBLEM OF THE AGE BRITAIN’S FINE LEAD (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Australian Press Assn. — United Service.) (Received September 28, 3 p.m.) OTTAWA, September 27.

Addressing the Canadian-Club at Victoria to-day, Rt. Rev. F. T. Woods, Lord Bishop- of Winchester, said : “The greatest- problem facing the age to-day is the reconciliation of efficient government with liberty of the individual, and the British Empire is, I hope, on her way to lead the world in this respect.”

He based his prediction, on Britain's stand for liberty- throughout tlm ages, i and her ingrained respect for the law. I “The highest object to be sought is one law by which justice, fellowship, and * peace shall be recognised by all nai tions. Of course, all nations seek to 1 retain their rights and sovereignty, but they cannot retain Complete sovereignty I when they acknowledge one, law. In ! the international law of peace we, should j he prepared to surrender whatever needs ; be surrendered of ,our fullest liberty ' to gain this end.” j The British Empire, lie said, fuvn- ! islied to the world an example of how each of the individual units could retain its rights of sovereignty, yet combine into one great commonwealth. The sacrifices of peace were nothing compared to the sacrifices of war.
