STEAMER AGROUND
A PRECARIOUS POSITION (Australian and N.Z. Presp Association.) COLOMBO, Sept, 22. The German steamer Hochst, bound from Colombo to Europe, is aground off Minicoy Island, and is reported to be badly 'disabled. The tug Hercules has gone in an attempt to refloat the merchantman. Minicoy Island is. over 400 miles from Colombo,' and is a storm-swept spot in tiie path of the approaching north-east monsoon. GETTING OUT OF CONTROL CARGO JETTISONED {Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received Sept. 23, 11 a.m.) COLOMBO, Sept. 22. A wireless message late in the evening states that the Hercules is expected to reach the disabled- Hochst at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. A message from the Hochst says the forepeak is flooded, and the lower holds one and two partly- flooded. The vessel is gradually getting out of control owing to-the heavy seas. It has been necessary to throw'the cargo overboard. Another German steamer is expected to reach Minicoy Island and will stand by till the arrival of the Hercules, 'ft is thought, that the vessel grounded when passing through a narrow channel between two reefs in heavy seas and thick mist.
