Steamer Struck by Lightning
It is seldom news is received of ships being struck by lightning with serious results. As the British mail steamer, Araguaya, was steaming from Bermudas to New York on a recent voyage, the wireless aerial was cut clean away by lightning. An officer on the bridge was burnt on the hands and blinded for several minutes; and a wireless operator who wiis wearing headphones was dazed by an explosion. The lightning passed down both sides of the ship. It affected the ship’s mag nctio compass and put all other compasses several points out of their true hearing. Observations taken of the l'olestar and wireless bearings received oil tlio American coast finally gave tho captain bis true direction.
