A protest ,againsi the increase inthe primage duty from 1 to 2 per cent, was made yesterday at a meeting of Auckland business men, which also expressed the opinion tliat any deficit in the national accounts sliould be met by reducing expenditure. The meeting was convened by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce at the suggestion of one of its members. Alr. F. S. Lunn retorted: “You must ♦lave been very deaf. The chamber lias always protested against increases in taxation.” Mr. Morton, persisting, was ordered to sit down, and eventually lie left as a protest against the manner in which the business was conducted.
