EMBARGO ON SUGAR
AUSTRALIAN OPPOSITION HIGH COST TO CONSUMER MELBOURNE, August 12. An organisation called the Town and Country Union has launched a campaign in favor of tho removal of the embargo. on Java sugar, owing to the high pi ice of Australian sugar. It is claimed that while Australian sugar costs consumers £36 10s per ton, Java white sugar could be landed at £lO 10s. The consequence is that Australia is paying £7,000,000 annually more than she should simply in tbe.inj terests of the home-grown article, which is now getting into the hands of.South' em Europeans. Tho union describes this penalty as enormous, and a number of representative- public bodies have promised to help the campaign.
