FARM and STATION
Slaughter of Calves. Complaint is made in some districts that the slaughter of calves for the export veal trade will mean a large shortage of beet' cattle in the near future, it being claimed that calves have been slaughtered in such large numbers since the opening of the trade that many of the good beef types, as well as sorts useless for dairying, have boon used for the "bobby" veal trade. To what extent the killing of calves has taken place in other districts, those living in this district are unable to tell, but it is remembered that even before the commencement of this industry there was a wholesale slaughter of calves in the larger dairying districts, and all the farmers received in return was a few shillings for each skin. Even at that time there were predictions that there would be a shortage of beef cattle as a result, and although this prophesy Mas partially fulfilled, the poor prices for beef are generally accepted as being the cause. In the Gisborne district beef cattle appear to be on the increase since the rise in the values, but here no "bobby" veal trade has been operating.
