BUDGET CRITICISED
PRIMAGE DUTY RESENTED DEMAND FOR ECONOMY iPer Press Association.) NAPIER, last night. The Budget, taxation proposals were severely criticised at a conference today of the Napier Chamber of Commerce and the Hawke’s Bay Employers’ Association, who resolved that “In view of the high cost of administering the country, we strongly uige the Government to reduce the cost of such administration rather than increase (the incidence may with advantage be varied), mure especially within the Civil Service itself, as we are informed by officers of this service that considerable economy can be effected.” The 'conference further resolved, “That is be a recommendation to the Government, that the primage duty on imported goods, instead of being increased to 2 per cent., be abolished, as primage duty was originally imposed as a war measure only, and that if extra taxation is necessary, favorable consideration be given to putting a further tax of 5 per cent, on all foreign importations to New Zealand, thus assisting the British Empire.”
