THIRD EDITION. OLD WILL FOUND
REVEALED BY ’QUAKE _____ hidden BEHIND mantel f Apart from the demolition of the chimneys and extensive interior damage to her home, a resident of Valley road, above Waituna, near Feilding, had another experience as the result of the recent earthquake. A marble mantelpiece became dislodged from the brickwork, and at the back of this a curious discovery was made. { In a niche in the brie Work was found a parchment, yellow with age, which proved to be a will, duly signed and attested, bearing the date 1840. The document has no connection with the present-day owners of the property, nor are the names of the maker of the will, the witnesses or the proposed benefiearies in any way familiar. The mantel came from England, and was fitted in the -house Some 30 years ago. . So far only a cursory examination of the will has been made, but closer inspection may reveal a little history of the early days in New Zealand. It is regarded as doubtful, after the lapse of 83 years, whether any great benefit would'accrue to descendants of the beneficiaries, assuming that they can be traced, but iu any case the document will be treasured both as a curiosity and as a memento of an eventful experience. *>
