RUGBY RULES

BALL IN THE SCRUM The question of who should put the ball in the scrum was discussed at a meeting of the Otago Rugby Football Union at Dunedin. In reply to a circular letter from the committee a number of clubs, with the exception of the High Schpol Club, wrote stating that they were in favor of the referee putting the ball in the serum.

Mr. A. J. Haub said Auckland had adopted this practice for some years. Mr. H. Harris said the question of uniformity had to be considered in connection with’ football in New Zealand. Personally he favored tlio referee putting the ball in the serum, but there was tho broad: aspect to bo considered. Some years ago tlie referee used to put the ball in the scrum, but the English Union then decided that it must be done by the players. Mr. G. Nelson said he did not believe in tampering with the rules of the English Union. The sooner they got back to those rules the better for the game.

After some further discussion it was decided, on the. motion of Mr. I). M. Stuart, to write to the N.Z.R.IJ, asking if it would give the Otago Union permission to have Hie ball placed in the scrum by referees in this district.
