DOG TRANSPORT

SOUTHERN INNOVATION HAULAGE OF MATERIALS (Special to tho Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. Probably for the first time in tho history of a building job in New Zealand dog teams will be used for the haulage of the material Teams of dogs intended for- the Byrd Antarctic expedition will be used to drag material for the construction of the new Malte Brun hut in the Mount, Cook district. The hut is about 12 miles up the Tasman Glacier, and the dogs will save the long trek by men who have to carry the timber and iron‘needed. Tenders will be called for the work in a few days, as Cabinet has increased the original vote for the new hut. The hut will be of approximately the same dimensions as the Ball Hut. Transport of the material from Fail-lie will be in the hands of the Mount Cook Motor Co., and it is expected that the company* will use the dogs which at present are in quarantine at Quail Island. The material will be taken as far as

possible up the road which is being built to the Ball Hut, then it will lie * transferred to the glacier, on which dog teams will be used. Pledges each .carrying 3CCOIb. will be drawn by the dogs.
