HUMAN REMAINS
UNCOVERED IN QUARRY FACE Some human remains wore uncovered last week at the now quarry which is being opened by the Otago Harbor Board at the North Spit. A steam excavator which is being used to remove the sand accumulated against the stone face disclosed the entrance to a low cave. At the entrance two human skulls and a number of hones were found in the sand about 30ft. from the cave. Another skull was uncovered at the base of the low cliff, from which stone will soon he quarried for usfe at the mole at the harbor entrance. The hones were discolored, having evidently been buried for a long time, hut the skulls were in a fairly good state of preservation. One lower jawbone was intact and none of the teeth were missing from it. So far as is known the only Maori burial ground on that side of the harbor was situated about a mile away from where those bones were found. Sergeant A. McCarthy visited the Spit on Saturday and brought the remains to Port Chalmers.
