BANK MANAGER RETIRES PRESENTATION AT TE ARAROA To mark the retirement on superannuation of Mr. deVere Howard, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, To Araroa, a. smoke social was held on Monday evening, when there were present about 35 business associates of Tc Araroa, neighboring townships, and Gisborne. Mr. Howard is retiring after 40 years’ service with the bank, about 11 years of which have been as manager in Te Araroa. He intends taking up his residence in Auckland. Mr. Geo. McKeddie presided, and a. number of toasts were honored, the one to the guest of the evening being proposed by the chairman, who spoke in glowing terms of Mr. Howard’s citizenship while he resided in Te Araroa. 1 The chairman added that, altogether apart from Mr. Howard’s obliging nature in business matters, their guest had taken a. great interest in the social affairs of the community, particularly with the Bowling Club, of which he had been a member for a number of years. The chairman referred muiiffy, however, to the very keen interest that Mr. Howard took in the children of the district, and he was always one of the prime movers in the inauguration of children’s sports and picnics. The following also added their quotas of praise for the sterling qualities of their guest:' Messrs, J. F. l’ettie, N. CIt. Hughes, P. Hockley, W. Ryall, K. Kenny, of Ruatoriil, It. C. Macniveo, W. Cederwall, of Gisborne, 11. F. Forster, of Gisborne, C. Adair, of Gisborne, and T. Schofield, of Gisborne. After a. presentation had been made of a tantalus, Air. Howard expressed bis appreciation, and said he would miss bis old friends in Te Araroa and district when bo went to Auckland to live in retirement, blit he hoped to revisit the place again in the not far distant future. An opportunity was taken to welcome Mr. Howard’s successor, Mr. Hargrove. During the evening the following gave iteiiis: Messrs. J. F. l’ettie, McCowan, Walworth, Hockley, >B- Allan, of Gisborne. and W. McClure, of Gisborne. Residents of the township and members of tlie Bowling Club also tendered farewells a few days prior to the business associates’ farewell.
