THEFTS OF SHEEP
A SUGGESTED REMEDY BAN ON NIGHT TRANSPORT (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, last night. The support of the Canterbury A. and P. Association is to be given to the effort of the Canterbury Sheepowners’ Union to have legislation brought down to prevent the. carrying of sheep in motor lorries at night. At a meeting of the committee of the association to-dav, Mr. Lockhead said the permitting of stock being transported at night presented too large ail opening to sheep stealers. He knew of numerous cases where sheep had been stolen at night and carted away in motor trucks. There was too good an opportunity offered to dishonest persons making easy money. A sheepowner in Oxford had suffered extensively from night raids by motor lorry thieves, who found it easy to got away with a number of sheep. lie also suggested that auctioneers should be compelled to stipulate the earmarks on the various lots of sheep offered for sale. Mr. J. I). Hull -said that legislation to prevent the carting of sheep at night was most desirable. He know it was a common thing for owners to lose stock in this wav.
It was agreed in discussion that legislation should require only that no sheep should be loaded or carted at night without a permit, and that sheep so carted would be subject to inspection by any police officer.
A motion was carried supporting the proposals of the sheep owners.
