LOCAL COMPETITIONS GOOD BATTING 1 Several good batting performances ' were witnessed at the Oval on Satur- ! day afternoon in the Poverty Bay Cricket Association \s senior competij tions, but considering that the wicket was in the batsmen's favor, there ' were not as many large individual 'scores as might have been expected. Bennett, playing for Celtic, topped the scores with 114, and Turanganui's best batsman, Ellis, was not far behind him. having knocked up five runs short of the century. There was a fairly big drop before the next best total was reached, and many of the 1 players were dismissed for low scores. I As the result of the day's play, Celtic are in a comfortable position, and look like securing a victory over i City, and Civil Service are also ; happily situated, although in a sligklIly lesser degree. The match between the Poverty Bay and Gisbome Clubs was postponed by mutual consent, anil it would be difficult to forecast the result of the other game, that between Turanganui and High School. BEST PERFORMANCES —Batting — P. Bennett (Celtic) 114, Ellis (Turanganui) 95, Mason (Civil Service) 40, D. Wells (Turanganui) 42, V. Norman (Celtic) 135, Robertson (Old Boys) 32, Hope- (Celtic) 29. —Bowling— Robertson (Old Boys), six for 52; Langhorne (High School), live for 47; Connan (Civil Service), live for 71.

ELLIS MAKES 95 AGAINST SCHOOL

] The feature of the match between j High School and Turanganui was the j batting of Ellis, who rnado 95 for the i latter team before being bowled by 'Owen. Turanganui's first inning's j total missed the two-century mark by live runs, and the only scorers of note were Ellis, D. Wells (42), Holdsworth (19), Blair (12), and Lynskey (11). Tor School, Langhorne took five wickets for 47. The schoolboys' first i strike opened promisingly, and when ! time was called the score stood at 37 ; for the loss of two wickets, Ogg having made 20 (not out) and Thomson 14. Apart from one chance he gave when his scores stood at between 40 and 50, Ellis batted nicely, and his total was made up chiefly of singles, with occasional twos and fours. CIVIL SERVICE LEADING

Civil Service sprang a surprise on Old Boys. On the first innings they secured a lead of nine runs, and in their second strike they compiled 33 without losing a wicket. Civil Service batted first, but with one exception their batsmen (compiled only small totals, the exception being Mason, who made 43; Turbitt, with 13, and Griffiths, with 10, were the only others to reach double figures, and when the last man was dismissed the score stood at 117. Three of the Old Boys batsmen acquitted themselves with a degree of credit, Robertson knocking up 31, Lockett 21, and Edwards 19, while E. Dow and O. Dow each contributed 12. The final score was 108. Robertson captured six of the Civil Service wickets at the expense of 52 runs, and Griffiths and Connan shared the bowling for Civil Service, the former taking three for 36, and the latter five for 71. Griffiths and Bignall were the opening pair for Civil I Service in their second strike, and nei- , ther succumbed to the bowling, com- • piling between them 31 runs, while two J were scored from extras. Scores : CTvTL SERVICE. First Innings.

I CELTIC MAKE A GOOD START

IF. Bennett's total of 114, compiled before be was stumped by Wilson, gave Celtic a good start in their match with City, and if they fare ae well in their

second innings there can bo little doubt as to the result of the match. Celtic's first four wickets fell for the satisfactory tally of 96, and then Bennett took his turn with the willow, and the score went up by leaps and bounds, reaching 265 before, the last wicket fell. Bennett was lucky to stay as long as ho did, however, for he gave several chances, which were not taken up by his opponents. V. Norman, with 55, also contributed handsomely to the total, while Hope made 29, and B. Scholium 24. There was not much time left for City, and when the bell rang their score stood at 33 for the loss of two wickets. Scores:

HAWKE CUP MATCH WAIAPU V. PALMERSTON N. The Waiapu Cricket Association's next future will bo a match with Manawatu, expected to be played in i'almerston North for the Hawke Cup, the minor associations' trophy in connection with which no elimination round is required this season. The association is also anxious to play a return match with Poverty Bay, and the opportunity may bo taken, it' convenient, to meet the Poverty Bay representative team at Gisborne on the return journey from Palmerston North, this arrangement effecting a considerable saving in expense to the Waiapu association. A suggestion has also been advanced that Uawa should throw in its lot with the Waiapu association, and it is felt in the Waiapu district that such a move would be a wise one in the best interests of the game on the Coast. TARUHERU V. WAIMATA NARROW WIN FOR TARUHERU Playing' at Taruheru, the newlyformed Waimata Cricket Club missed winning by only four runs. The game was interesting throughout and especially during the last innings, when i! became evident that there would lie ;i close finish. Some good bowling was witnessed, but the fielding was not brilliant, Taruheru's especially being in direct contrast, to that displayed in the previous weekend's game with the Kaiti freezing works team.
