SHIPPING FREIGHTS
BRITISH MERCHANTS ALARMED MELBOURNE, 'lan. 24. Exporters to Australia from Britain are seriously afraid of competition from America if the British ship owners raise their freights to Australia. This view was expressed yesterday by Mr. I>. F. Ash, who is on a business tour to Australia. He is a representative of Keep Brothers, Birmingham. He said the reason British merchants were becoming alarmed was American ship owners were even now trying to cut. into British shipping trade, and were reducing freights ai) round.\ If the British owners put up their freights, and the- Americans put theirs down, it would mean that the American manufacturers would have ■nn unfair advantage on the Australian market, and would proceed to get in well with their goods. Even if the British freights remained stationary, there would be a chance of the American freights coming down and the American goods getting a hold on the market. The British ship owners stood a possibility of losing a good deal of their Australian trade if they did put tho freights up.
