AUCKLAND.LADY'S SALE OLD FAMILY HEIRLOOMS (Special to (ho Herald.) AUCKLAND, this day. Mrs. Lushington. Iho owner of I lie picture recently sold at Christie's, London, is aged 83 years, and i". now living in Auckland. Her husband, the late Mr ('. M. Lushington. scion of an old Kent family, came to New Zealand in 1802 and took up a property at Mast Tamaki. Among his belongings were a number of oictures, including those jus! sold at Christie's. They bad been in the Lushington family for a long while, and their value was quite appreciated and understood. During the. time the Lushinglnns lived at Tamaki their wooden bouse very nearly caught fire a.s the result of the burning of a nearby stable. Shortly afterwards tliov moved to Mahnrand Heads, where the house was a concrete one, and the valuable pictures were felt to be much safer. In 1923 Mis. Lushington sent a van Ruisdael to Loudon, but it failed to reach the reserve of 830 guineas, and it was sent back. This is the one that has now >! een sold for 30CU guineas. When a year back Mrs. Lushington came to Auckland to live she ('id not like the idea of risking the pictures n<rain in a wooden bouse, and so do cided to send the greater part, of the collection to London for sale. She dispatched over 30 pictures.
