BUTTER MANUFACTURE GISBORNE'S RECORD SEASON During the past two seasons the manufacture of butter in Poverty Bay and coastal districts lias shown an increase on thai for December, according to figures relating to the amounts of butter handled at the Uisboruo stoics. This season, however, the January grading store receipts show a decline over the figures for December, but. despite Ibis, last month still has a substantial lead when compared with the corresponding period for last season, which was a record one for butter exports from Gis borne. In the 1926-27 season a bad start bad been made, as the district, was just recovering from the lengthy dry spell of the summer before. The conditions were improving considerably as the dairying period advanced, with the result that the greatest quantity of butter graded for any month was in January. Last season, November saw the largest amount graded, but during that period January came very close to November, and showed an increase on the amounts which came to the grading stores in December. This season December was the peak month with about 4CO boxes more than for November, but for last month there was a decrease of 890 boxes, the decline in production approximating 10 per cent., hut even with last- month's decrease and the increase recorded for January last year, last month still holds its place as one in which the greatest quantity of butter has been received at the Gisborne grading stores. This season's total shows an increase ■f more than 4000 boxes over the figures for the corresponding portion of the previous period, while the total for 192''--27 is left well in the rear. The Gisborne grading figures for the present and pas! two seasons from month to month up till January are given
