SWIMMING
GISBORNE CLUB'S CARNIVAL One of the chief entertainments this week will be the Gisborne Amateur Surf and Swimming Club's carnival at the High School baths to-morrow evening. Past, carnivals have always received splendid support, and it is anticipated that to-morrow night's one will be largely attended. The programme is lengthy, and includes an attractive variety of swimming, diving, and relay events, all of which should be well contested. E. T. Chrisp, ex-Poverty Bay champion, will make a welcome reappearance in the 150yds. President's Handicap. This will be the first occasion that Chrisp has participated in swimming races for a considerable time. He is reported to be in good form, and should be a worthy opponent for R. Richardson, R. Colebourne, W. R. Barton, and R, W. McKeague. Sixcompetitors will tako part in the 100 yards ladies' handicap for the Mckinley Cup. Among the swimmers will bo Miss Nancy Stevens, the Poverty Bay champion and Hawke's Bay 100yds, intermediate girls' title holder, and Miss M. McPhaill, one of the most promising lady swimmers in Hawke's Bay at the present time.
Roth the 50yds. schoolboys' and the ladies' breastroko handicaps have received large entries, while the diving event has been divided into two sections, 18 competitors having entered. Seven heats and two semi-finals will have to bo decided before the finalists can be selected in the Go" 2-3yds. men's handicap. A novelty event and two relay handicaps will conclude the programme.
