HEENEY’S INTENTIONS
EARLY FIGHT EXPECTED NEWCOMERS AVOIDED Tho statement contained in a cable message this week’ that, loin /Heeney was undecided as to whether he wanted to tight again has not caused any doubts in the minds of his friends and relatives in Gisborne. Heerey’s intention when he left Gisborne last year was to have at least two more contests before quitting the ring, and letters received from his wife this week make it clear that he has not changed Ins plans. In a letter written on December 30, Mrs. Heeney stated that Tom was well again after his illness, and had started doing light training. No arrangements had been made for a match, but Tom expected to fight in either February or March. A significant paragraph in the letter was an injunction to completely ignore statements appearing in American newspapers, this having particular reference to an announcement cabled some time ago that Mrs. Heeney wanted Tom to leave the ring. It is generally believed that this week’s cable message indicates that Tom is holding off until he can secure a match with one of his former opponents, he having expressed a preference for a bout with some one he has met before rather than with a newcomer of unknown ability.
