RAILWAY CONSTRUCTION
MORNINGSIDE DEVIATION (Special U> the Herald.) WELLINGTON, this .day. In addition to the' South island and Wairoa-Gisborne railway routes, which have to be inspected by Ministers before limit decision is given regarding 'construction, another important work which was included in the former Goverumentfs -railway 'vimp/rovemant programme is under investigation. This is the Momingside deviation on the Kaipara railway, leading from Auckland' The plan involves a long, expensive tunnel 'beneath the city. Suburban traffic developments in all parts of the world raise the qucstioti of whether heavy outlay on railway is desirable. Though the deviation would save much time and operating expense for through traffic to North Auckland, it is understood to be an open question of whether the new Government will authorise the expenditure at present. The position is to be closely investigated by the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, who will shortly visit Auckland, accompanied by Mr. H. H. Sterling, general manager of railways.
