riKST ANNUAL PICNIC The first annual picnic of the GisborneEast Coast branch of the Young Men’s Christian Association took place on Mrs. W. C. McLean’s property at- the Hole-in-the-Wall on Anniversary Day, when some 100 members and friends spent- a most enjoyable time participating in a programme of general interest. Members of the association had prepared the grounds for athletic sports and cricket, Avhile tents and dressing shelters Avere erected. The morning was devoted to swimming races, all of which were Avell contested and provided a good deal of interest to parents and friends of the boys. After luncheon a treasure hunt Avas instituted, which gave the treasure seekers a very thrilling half-hour. One of the boys, Aveary of searching, sat down practically on "top of the hiding place, and received a great- surprise when the winner, I. Stacey, extracted the prize from near where he Avas resting. Athletic. sports were conducted during the afternoon, both competitors and spectators evincing keen enthusiasm. The results of the sports Avere as under:— SWIMMING' Boys, 12 years and under 14 : H. Robinson 2. Employed boys: G. Quinn 1. Egg and spoon race: Miss Jackson 1, Miss Winter 2. Boys under 10 years: P. Henderson 1, M. Tinton 2. y lOOydss High School race: E. Grant 1, F. Collin 2. Whistling race: IT WL McKenzie 1. Girls under 10 years: Miss D. Pvatt 1, Misses M. Pvatt and Henderson (dead heat) 2. Egg and spoon race, men: E. W. McKenzie 1, A. Holmes 2. Prominent members of the ladies' committee provided the luncheon and refreshments, which were greatly appreciated by all present.
