“MONEY BUYS NOTHING”
WHY RUSSIAN PEASANTS WILL NOT SOW ‘.RIGA, Nov. 12. Reliable observers state that there is a general unwillingness on the pari of the peasants of .Soviet Russia to sow grain beyond the limits necessary to feed their own families. There is an evident reduction of the area spwn with winter rye, which is tho principal crop in Russia, except in the sou'll. Peasants declare that grain-growing ifloes not pay and ask why should they work when "tho Soviets take their crops. One peasant stated that in . former years his farm yielded him llnee times as much as this year, owing to the requisitions of the grain eommissai’s. For part, of these requisitions he had not been able to obtain cash. “This money buys nothing," he said. Great dissatisfaction exists in Russia owing to tho Soviet grain commissars compelling the peasants to sell their crops. Part of the grain is used to feed industrial centres and part for export, although in some parts the conditions approach famine.
