Devonport went quietly about its normal business recently quite unaware of the fact that over 10001 b. of cordite the explosive used in smallarms ammunition was being burned at the artiillery yards at North Heads. Cordite is quite harmless when burned, so long as it has free access to the open air. It bunts with a sizzling sound, making a bright yellow flame. The Defence Department’s store of explosives is subjected to regular half-yearly examinations and any portion showing deterioration below a certain recognised standard is condemned. Some of the cordite destroyed had been in store for 15 years.
