The New Zealand Racing Conference gave judgment on the appeal against the decision of the Auckland District Com mittr-c in connection with the ownership of the horse (berry Ripe. The substance of the charge was Unit in May. 1922, Dr. (’. It Murphy became a partner with William Ryan, a. bookmaker, in the horse (’berry Ripe, and ill the subsequent- racing of the horse in Australia and New 'Zealand. Murphy asserted that he bought, the horse from Ryan in May, 1922, and that, after that date Ryan had no interest in the horse.
The. District Committee, by a majority, decided that tlie charge against Murphy was not proved. Tlie judges were of the opinion that the charge against Murphy was conclusively established. and strengthened by bis own statements and conduct. The offence was serious and deliberate, and continued over a period of years. The appeal was allowed, and Murphy was convicted ol corrupt practice and disqualified /or live years.
