TE KARAKA FUNCTION

ST. JOHN’S PARISH HALL

BISHOP PERFORMS OPENING

Erected to serve Hie needs of the Anglican community at 'To. Kanaka lorn, Sunday school, and also to provide accommodation for the smaller class of entertainment in the township, and especially the social functions of the parishioners, the new St. John’s parish hall at To Kanaka was dedicated and formally opened yesterday by Dr. Sedgwick. Bishop of Waiapu. The building is well designed for the purposes to which it is intended to be put, and provides a floor.space of 34ft. in length and R/ft. in width, while a commodious porch and a stage running the full width of the building, and 18ft. in depth, should give ample scope for social entertainments on. a small scale.; in addition, there is a small kitchen with facilities for the preparation of light suppers, an essential foal lire in a country hall. Yesterday’s dedication function was very well attended, and the Bishop ot Waiapu was assisted by the Rev. R. Hodgson as chaplain, while other clergymen present were the Rev. W. G. S. Cameron, vicar of Te Karaka parish, the Rev. C, G. Salt, vicar of l’atutnhi parish, and the Rev. A. A. Barham, of Holy Trinity. The Bishop was heartily welcomed by 31 r. Cameron, and Mr. L. 11. Maclean, people’s warden of the chiireli, also gave His Lordship a welcome, on behalf of the parishioners. In the course of Iris reply, Dr. Sedgwick emphasised the fact that- such a hall as they were opening that day was not a luxury, but an actual necessity, for without it there would he no chance of promoting tho work among the young people of Hie parish,- developing the Sunday school work, and providing the youth of the community with that class of social life within the church which they needed. Congratulations on the manner in which the hall had been built were ten derod to the builders, Messrs. "Mead and Bradley. Excellent workmanship bad been put into the structure, which bad been economically designed, and should servo the needs of the parish for some time.

At the close of the dedication service, a sale of wofk and reunion of parishioners was held, there being a splendid attendance. Several stalls did a fine trade in produce and the other staple commodities of such tunctions, and a considerable sum was raised for the church by the energy oi the workers and tlie generosity of their customers.
