SOCIAL JOTTINGS (By "Yvonne.") Miss Margaret Sherratt returned last week from a visit to Pa!m«rston North and Marton. Mr. C. Tietjen has left for a health trip to Eotorua, accompanied by Mrs. Tietjen.

Mrs. C. 11. Bull returns to-day after visiting her sister, Mrs. Slater, at Island Bay, Wellington, and also friends in Wanganui.

Mrs. H. E. Williams was a visitor to Havelock North to attend the Woodford House school sports. Miss M. Scott, who has been studying nursing in Wellington Hospital, returned home last week. Mrs. Trevor Brett, who was the guest of Mrs. 11. G. Kicc while visiting Gisborne, has returned to Auckland.

Mrs. B. C. Watkins, of Ruatoria, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. W. G. Maclaurin.

Mrs. P. Parker, who has been the guest of Mr. and Mrs. G. I. Parker, lias returned to Auckland.

Mr, J. H. Taplin returned last Fri day from a visit to the south.

Miss Nancy Whitehead, who has been the guest of her aunt, Mrs. G. Stock, left to-day on her return to Timaru.

Miss P. Ferguson, of Cambridge, is visiting her "sister, Mrs. B. Muir. Mrs. Walter BlundeM and Miss Didsbury, of Wellington, are the guests of Mrs. A. J. Dixon, Russell street, having motored through in their own car.

Mr. and Mrs. Nugent, who have been on a vsit to England, have returned to the coast.

Miss E. Gambrill has gone to Wellington on a holiday visit. Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Gambrill, who have been living in Tokomaru Bay for some months, have now returned to town.

Mrs. 1». C. Somervell, who lias been spending some weeks in Gisborne, returned to Hastings last week.

Mrs. T. S. Williams and Mrs, H. Burnett, of Ruatoria, East Coast, are on a visit to Auckland.

Mrs. .las. Todd, of Tokomaru Bay, is on a visit to Auckland and is staying with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. W. Nichol, Mount St. John Avenue, Epsom. Mrs. C. Giblin ( Mangaruhi) is the guest in Gisborne of Mis. E. J. Eeynolds.

Mrs. W. A. Parton, of Wellington, is visiting Hawke's Bay, and later will visit Gisborne.

Miss Muriel Smith, Poverty Bay, is visiting Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. 0. T. Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Harold Williams, of Ruatoria, East Coast, are visiting Auckland.

The Sydney joining- Herald in itt social columns, announces the engage ment of Marion, the younger daughter of Mr. T. Lowrv, of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, to Dr. Reginald H. Bettington. of Merriwa, New South Wales, who is playing with the Australia!'. eleven on Friday. It was recently announced that Miss Betty Allen, 8.A., daughter of "Vesta," of the Melbourne Argus, well known formerly in New Zealand as Miss Stella Henderson of the, Lyttelton Times, sister of the present editor and sister-in-law of Mr. MeCombs, M.P., of the Labor Party, had won the Commonwealth scholarship in mathematics given by the trustees of the Science and Industries Endowment Fund. The allowance is £350 per annum for the first two years, which will be spent in research at the Rothamsted agricultural research station in England. The next three years wfll be spent in Australia, following up the work on a yearly increasing salary. TENNIS After two postponements, the opening of the Kaiti and Whataupoko tennis courts took place last Saturday afternoon in fine weather, though a rather high wind affected-play in the earlier part of the afternoon, and rain brought the games to a close later in the day. There was a large attendance at both clubs, and many interesting sets were contested.

At Whataupoko the tea table in the pavilion was 4 offset with a centre bowl of'apricot and white ■ roses, and the afternoon tea was very much appreciated.

WEDDING WARREN—LAWS A marriage of New Zealand interest mentioned by the London correspondent of the Post was that of the Rev. Alwyn K. Warren, assistant curate of Ash'ford, Kent, younger son of .Major T. G. Warren and the late Mrs. Warren, of Penlee, Tc Ante, Hawke's Bay (grandson of "the late Archdeacon Williams, of Te Aute), to Doreen Eda, only daughter of Captain and Mrs. F. C. Laws, Court Lodge, Great Chart, Kent. The ceremony was a choral .one, and the officiating clergy were the Principal of' Cu'ddesdon, Bishop-Designate of Wakefield, and the Rev. H. W. Blaekbume, D. 5.0., M.C., vicar of Ashford. The bride wore a period gown of ivory satin charmcuse, with a gold and pearl girdle. . Her train of" Brussels lace (lent by her aunt, Mrs. Gifford Jeffrey) was lined with gold lace, and her head dress was a high coronet of orange blossom with Brussels net veil. The, bridal bouquet was of yellow roses and white heather. The four bridesmaids, the Misses Marjorie James, Mary Warren and Mary' James, and Countess Thelma Metaxa (cousin of the bride), were in dresses and three-quarter length coats and scarves of geraniumcolored georgette, hand-embroidered in gold, their velvet picture hats be-

ing to match. They shower bouquets of carnations to tone. Mr. H. B, Bathurst Norman was best man, and the groomsmen were Lieut. M. Cunningham and Messrs Geoffrey Fieiines and James' Nelson. A great many relatives and friends were ut the reception, which was held a I the Rembrandt hotel. The bride and the bridegroom later left for Italy, the bride wearing an azure tweed coat over a dress of c'repe-de-chine of the same tone, and a hat of satin-felt to match.
