LAKE TUTIRA

PICNICKING AND BOATING? An opinion that the time is fast arriving when Lake Tutira should be made available for use by the general public was expressed by Mr. V. Barry at the last meeting of the Hawko's Bav County Council.

He pointed out that with the railway now reaching to Tutira the lake came within easy range of Napier arid Hastings. It would provide a good breathing space for the people of the two towns, and he thought they were entitled to more consideration than a few fish and birds. Protection could be given the birds by reserving to them the smaller ilake at the back of Tutira homestead. Mr. T. Mason Chambers said he would be very sorry to see Lake Tutira made anything titan a sanctuary for birds, and if would be regrettable to see shooting parties on the lake destroying the bird life, Mr. Barry repli.'d that it was not iiis intention that the restrictions on the lake should be removed. All he wanted to see was that the lake would be available to the public for picnicking end for boating. The lake could be M.stod in some board, and people couid be appo'mtel from Tutira and Napier. Mr. Barry added that he only mentioned thematic-- at this stage hecause it was likely to come forward al a later date.
