LAVA INVADES MASCALI EFFORT TO DIVERT STREAM (Australian and N.Z Press Association.; ROME, November 8. The authorities at Catania have decided to attempt to divert the main torrent of lava from Mount Etna by opening up- an artificial outlet to the sea and thus save Fiume, Freddo and Caltabiano. Five hundred army engineers, assisted by many gangs of workers, will endeavor to divert the stream along a course made by blasting roads with tons of dynamite. When the stream approached Mascali the houses on the outskirts collapsed one after another with lour reports, and were practically melted. The sound of the advancing lava was like county less sacks of coals being heavily dumped. Scientists believe that the present disaster is a most reajjstic reproduction of the destruction oT Herculaneum by Vesuvius. .
