CHRISTMAS TOURNEY

WILLIAMS SHIELD RULES Plans for a Christmas tournament. including championship and handicap classes in open and junior grades, were discussed at a meeting of the Poverty Bay and Fast Coast Lawn Tennis Association, held on Wednesday evening. Mr. N. IT. Bull, president of the association, was in the chair, and there were also present: Messrs. C. L. Margoliouth, A. 11. Hinge, If. Woodrow, tt. Alley, and G. B. Mirtield. Business dealt, with in the early stages of the meeting were the application of the Buatoria club for affiliation, which was granted; and the reappointment of Messrs. N. A. Foden and R. Beere as delegates from the association to the New Zealand Council. Messrs. Foden and Beere were thanked for their efforts on behalf of the local organisation during its initial year. With regard to the Christmas tournament., entry fees were decided on for the various classes, the championship fees being fixed at 5s per entry, and championship doubles at 7s 6cl per pair. Smaller fees were fixed for the handicap. and the junior grade, and it was resolved that a. payment of £1 entitled any player to entry to all grades for which he or she is eligible. The association executive decided to close entries for the tournament on December 15, and to announce flie draw on December 20. The secretary was instructed to apply to the Gisborne Lawn Tennis Club for permission to use that club’s courts for tlm tournament. DISTRICT COMPETITION. Discussion proceeded on the rules for the LL B. Williams Shield competition, which it was decided recently should be conducted on a district basis. The following rules were adopted : (1) An inter-club competition will be held annually between such affiliated clubs as desire to compete, provided that each team entered be approved by the association.

(2) The district will be divided into groups, which groups are to bo decided bv the association executive.

(3) The competition will he conducted on the knock-out system, and the association will draw up a schedule of dates and places for the matches, tho association reserving the power to indicate the draw and the venues of matches.

(4) A team from each group will consist of six laejies and six men, all members of affiliated clubs, each group deciding the composition of its own team. (5) Men’s singles and doubles, ladies' singles and doubles, and combined doubles will bo played in each match. (6) In singles each player will meetthe players of the opposing team, and in doubles and combined doubles each pair will meet an opposing pair as nominated.

(7) Men’s singles and doubles, and combined doubles, will lie decided by the best three sets advantage; ladies’ singles and doubles on the best 17 games’ advantage. (8) In computing points, each win by any member or any pair of a team shall count as one point, and if two teams are equal in the final, the team having won the greater number of points will be declared (be winner. Should the matches and games be equal, the two teams will play off. (9) The ground committee of the home, club in any match will decide whether the rpurls are lit, for plav on the dev fixed for Use mulch.

(10) All postponed matches will 1)0 played on a. day fixed by the chairman of the association, in consultation with the association secretary, the day to be approved by both groups involved. (11) Groups will be responsible for arrangements for matches and for supplies of halls. • (12) The group secretaries or delegates will notify the association of the personnel of the teams at least seven days prior to the matches. (13) Results of matches will be at once forwarded to the association by the group delegates or secretaries. (14) All disputes arising out of the rules or from other causes must he referred to the association, the decision of that body being final. (15) Each group will appoint a. group delegate or secretary. (16) Any player who is a member of more than one club must nominate the club - which he is prepared to represent in shield matches. DRAW FOR FIRST ROUND.

The draw for the first round of the 11. B. Williams Shield competition, for the current season, made as under: No. 2 group (Ivaiii) plays No. 3 group (City. Whataupoko, and Mungapapa), at Gisborne Club’s courts; No. 4 group (To Hapara and country) plays No. 1 group (East C'-bast), at "Te Hapara Club’s courts.

The first round l is to be played oil before January 31, 1929. In order to place the competition on a good footing immediately, Mr. G. Alley was appointed by the association to devise, in consultation with the clubs concerned, a method of selection for group No. 3; and Mr. E. Woodrow was given a similar duty in respect.of No. 4 group. Mr. W. S.’Thompson was appointed to arrange for the selection of the Coast clubs’ representatives.

The Gisborne, and To Hapara latwn Tennis clubs will hold their official opening functions to-morrow afternoon.
