DISASTROUS FIRE
BIG BLAZE AT OAMARU (Per Press Association.) OAMARV, this day. Tiie biggest lire for nearly JO years occurred at 4.30 u clock this morninsf'il Waitaki. A two-storey building in Thames street, owned by Mr. \\. Aikenhead, draper, was destroyed, the ‘damage being estimated at about £BOOO. Air. Aitkenliead’s shop was gutted, and the stock is ;i. total loss. Mr. 11. Grenfell’s mercery stock was badly damaged by water, and Air. J. Alartyu s cycle and sporting stock was similarly damaged. Mr. L. Frame’* hairdresser’s stock and fittings were destroyed, the Misses Cartwright lost three pianos, furniture, and music, while the stock, furniture., and fittings of Air. J. Gunning, tailor, Mrs. Gibson, dressmaker, and W. Brown, commission agent, aie a total loss. The lire, is believed lo have started in the rear of the. building. A heavy wind made a hard light for the brigade. Mr. Aikenhead’s shop and upstairs portion were gutted. The insurances are: Air. Aikenhead, £4009 on the building, in the National office, and £3OOO on tho stock in the New Zealand and Standard offices. Ho will be a heavy loser. Mr. Grenfell, £ISOO on (ho stock in the Sun. New Zealand, and South British; Air. Marty n, £575 on the stock and plant.; Misses (‘artweight. £245 on the furniture in the Smith British: Mr. Frame, £l5O. Messrs. Highway, Brown, (libson and Gunning had their tilling.': insurer! for about £l5O.
