“TO MABEL!”
LOS ANGELES TOAST “HOW DRY WE AREN’T” WASHINGTON, Sept. 28. The Republican committee has sent the spectacular Airs. Mabel Willebrandt, a leading woman official of the Prohibition administration staff, to do much of its rough work against Governor Al. Smith, the Democratic candidate for the Presidency. Out in Los Angeles, Mabel is the toast of tlie town. She has been busy lately padlocking the New York night clubs, and Los Angeles sincerely hopes that she will stay there- for'the remainder of her tile. There is nothing to drink in Los Angeles nowadays except wine, beer, Scotch, moonshine, corn “likker,” baeardi, rum, champagne, five star brandy, squaveface Hollands, liquers, Chartreuse, Benedictine, applejack, grain alcohol, high-power tonics, prescription whisky, and drug store gin But if you are willing to sample any one of these, your host- will probably raise bis glass and say, “Well, here's to Mabel.” “What do you mean?” asks the tender, foot,. “Here’s hoping she. stays east of the Rockies,” replies your host, who does not care how much pall she throws over Broadway.
