COUNCIL’S MONTHLY MEETING (Herald Correspondent.) There were present at the Wairoa County Council meeting Crs. A. U. Nolan (chairman), G. C. Ormond. J. Tait, R. Mclntyre, A. T. Carroll, F. H. Norris, and I). D. Pryde. The assistant under-secretary, Public Work Department, advised that 32 chains of road giving access to Wairoa railway station and goods .shed had been handed over.—Accepted.—The resident engineer, Public Works Department, advised that the head office was prepared to recommend the Minister to subsidise the Sandy Bay and Rosie Bay roads, Waikaremoana, to the extent of £1 for £1 conditional on the council legalising the same. It was decided to inform the resident engineer that the council was prepared to pay half the cost to Rosie Bay, hut to point out that it was not necessary to legalise this, as ii ran through Government. property and there was no road to join it up will).—II was decided to accept a further length of the Mangaone-Manga-poike road to a point marked 3m. 71eh. —The Commissioner of Crown Lands advised the procedure to exchange the Ruakituri road reserve.—The matter is to go forward I . —The chief surveyor, Gisborne, returned approved plans of. a road deviation survey at-the Mangatawa bridge.—Legalisation was authorised. ' The Commissioner of Crown Lftnds, Napier, advised that section 21, Mnliangs, had been reserved for recreation purposes, and the council would he ap pointed (o'control it. -The chairman stated that- under the Domains Act only six days a year could he charged for, whereas the people wanted the right to get a gate more often than that.—

Or. Ormond staff'd that the East Coast railway, if it went via the coast, would run through the Domain. —It was derided to ask the Commissioner to let the matter stand over until the railway route was decided upon.

The Tairawhiti Land Board advised that it was necessary to make a separate application in respect to each block for which the council desired a receiver appointed under the Rating Act. —The Borough Council, being unable to grant a portion of the Orerc reserve for a stock paddock, the chairman said other steps must bn taken to secure a paddock.—'l'he deputy-official assignee forwarded a cheque for £2l 18s 9d, first dividend of 2s 6d in the £ in the estate of W. J. McKay.

Messrs. Garble, McLean, Scanned, and Wood wrote regarding the East Coast, railway construction and road access to Paeroa blocks, and asked if the council would take over the two proposed roads with the barest amount of metal.—The chairman said this really was not the business of the council, for it. could not stop the Crown from declaring any read a county road. The matter was one between Messrs. Harrison and Harvey, and the Crown. The council had no option. —It was decided to reply that the council intended to protest against the handing over unless the roads were formed and metalled.

At the request of the public trustee, the council nominated Mr. A. Rowbottoin, of Waipawa, on the Howard estate advisory board. The engineer, Mr. A. G.\ Smith, was instructed to improve, the road at Messrs. Hill and Christie’s gate, Kai-

rangi.—lt was decided that the Tuhara stock paddock deed be signed.—A further length of the Ruakituri-Waimana road was taken over.—Mr. Conn, of Tukemokilii station, was informed that he must look to the Public Works Department for improvements to the Tukemokilii bridge approach.

It was decided to send on to the Public Work'H Department the council’s decision to abandon tar-sealing this season and to proceed with the preparation of four miles of the Wairoa-Fraser-town road for next year.—A list of reserves was sulunitled, some of which had already been vested in the council, while others were not needed. Two were stated to he in the Cook County. The engineer was instructed to tabulate those vested in the council, those required, and those not needed

The chairman mentioned that Mr. Signal! had been unable to attend the County Clerks’ Conference, hut in his absence he was appointed to represent Hawke’s Bay, an intimation that lie was looked on as the leading clerk in Hawke’s Bay, and 1 a compliment to the council.

The engineer was instructed to inspect Tahaenui River road, on which £2OO is to he spent to give Mr. fe. A. Dickie access; £SO, £1 for £l, and £25 each from Tuhara and Nuhaka ridings, and the balance Government grants.—Cr. Prvde’s notice of motion to rescind a resolution confining the use of the council chambers to the Farmers’ Union and the A, and P. Society was carried. Applications will he dealt with on their merits.—lt was derided to ask the Hawke’s Bay County Council not to consent to the closing of the old Wait: ari crossing, on the Coast road, which would? mean the crossing of sheep at. a dangerous spot.
