OPERATIC BROADCASTS
Considerable difficulty was experienced in arranging for broadcasts by members of the Italian Grand Opera Co. during the recent Sydney season. Only a, few such broadcasts could be arranged for by the New South Wales Broadcasting C'o., and the benefit of the most of them for listeners was impaired by the fact that tlie majority of the grand opera broadcasts were, through no fault of the stations. put on the air without sufficient prior notice to listeners, hi fact, many listeners only knew of the grand opera broadcasts when a notice appeared in the papers stating that they hacl been suesessfully accomplished. They manage such broadcasts far better in Italy. Mussolini’s Ministry of Communications has directed that all grand opera artists must broadcast from Home, Naples, and .Milan, when required to do su by the Government Broadcasting Control Board. This might be taken as another advantage of having Government control in broadcasting. Tn any case it lias (lie effect of securing high-class entertainment programmes in Italy, with the result that next to 2LO (London) Milan is the most popular broadcasting station in Europe.
