FANCY DRESS BALL AND CONCERT (Herald Correspondent.) Last Friday evening the Matawai Hall was packed to overflowing when the school hold Us annual fancy dress ball and concert. A few days prior lo the gathering a working 1 boo was engaged in decorating the hall, the result being the subject of many congratulatory remarks of all present. A programme .of varied items by the children was heartily enjoyed by all, the applause after each item demonstrating the large audience's appreciation of the thorough training of the children by the teachers.
The evening opened with the National Anthem by .the school choir, which followed with a sweet rendering of "How Sweet the Call." The senior boys and girls sang "The Mill Wheel," while the juniors followed With "Golden Slumbers." Mariana Caleott recited '' The King's Breakfast," the next item being a duet, "The Sentinal," by Betty Emmerson and Martin Hooper. A trio "The Rosy Morn," by Betty Emmcrson, Trixie Bobb aipl Hazel Hooper, was well received, while a playotte, "The scene from the Mill on the Floss," acted by Betty Emmcrson, Maggie Tulliver, doe Thompson and Tom Tub liver, brought the concert programme lo a successful ending. Thi' grand march by the children in their fancy dresses was loudly applauded by the children marching with a bearing that would do credit to a regimental march past. Smith (Ben Hur), M. Smith (Moorish attendant), B. Emrnerson (Blue Board), M. Ashdown (Tudor Girl), D. Ashdown (Fairy), J. Bobb (Early Victorian). N. Clark (Spanish Pierette), N. Caleott (Bed hilling Hood), M. Jacobs (Dutch Girl), .A. Jacobs (Sugar), ,S. Mehrfens (Bride), T. Robb (Old Fashioned English Lady), W. Kotare (Dafodill), A. David (Hard Up), H. Finlavson (Red Rose), J. O'Rourko (Daffodil). C. Caleott (Red Indian), and S. Davis (Robin Hood); Masters G. Ktrrtc (Cowboy), H. Korte (Imp). M. Hooper (Clown), F, Korte (Indian), J. Hustler (Jockey), C. Ashdown (Chef), K. Fleming (Football), M. Kerckere (Maize Cob), L Kerekere (Indian), J. Moughtou (Tudor Boy),, Q, Quick (Baker). M. Brown (Jackie Coogan), D. Bobb (Clown), E. Clark (Charlie Chaplin), I. Mehrtens (Bubbles), M. Gregory (Boy Llwd), J. Le Prou (Gene Tunney), M. Le Prou(Barney Coo Goo), P. Surrey (Boy Blue), K, O'Rourko (Indian), J, O'Rourko (Tom Heeney), and A. Stevens (Aladdin). The children held the floor until 10.30 o'clock, when they sat down to a well laid out supper, the adults then carrying on until the early hours of the morning. Of the workers who helped to make the evening such a success it is hard to single out any of the usual baud of ladies and gentlemen who are always to the fore in any organisation which' is for the bcnellt of the • district, especially the school, but special praise is due to Miss Gamble for ttie artistic decorations of the hall, and also for the manner in which the children performed their items, while the headmaster, Mr. Hngget, proved a capable organiser. Music was supplied by Mrs. Mehrtens, and the Misses Blomquist and Fleming. At present the residents of the district are looking forward to the subunion ball at Motu, when the Caulton Cup will be presented to the Matawai Club, winners of this year's club competitions. Another event which is keenly anticipated will be n presentation dance by ihe Matawai Football Club, the occasion being the approaching wedding of one of its popular members.
