COUNTY ENGINEER’S REPORT

(Herald Correspondent.)

At this week's meeting of the Wairoa, County Council the engineer, Mr. A. G. Smith, reported inter alia: — “The work on the Waitahora bridge is making good progress and weather permitting should be completed before next council meeting. The temporary structure in connection with the building of the Opoko bridge Inis been erected, and the old bridge partly dismantled. The contractor has commenced driving the piles. The work on One Tree Gully culvert is held up until the big filling consolidates, when the old bridge will be dismantled and the tilling completed and metalled.

"The material for Hincksman’s bridge is being carted to the bridge site as the weather permits. Mo further communication in connection with the sizo of cables has been received from the Public Works Department. Mo work has been carried out on the Waiatai bridge during the past month, except keeping the approaches in repair. Only maintenance work has been carried out on Horseshoe deviation during the past month. “Mr. Sturm, of Muliaka, has given 7000 pines to be planted on the county reserve at Opoutama; 4000 have been planted and the other 3000 will be planted this week. Fair progress has been made with MsArdlc’s bridge and ii should be completed by the end of next week.

“Accompanied by the county chairman, I interviewed the Mayor of the Wairoa Borough in connection with tar sealing ,the portion of the main highway through the borough. It was decided that the County Council prepare Die specifications for the proposed works and that the county and borough call tenders at the same date for carrying out the work. The preparation ol the portion of the roads proposed to ue tar sealed requires to be put in hand.

MAIN HIGHWAYS

“Napier-Gisborne, via Morere, main highway: General surface and power grader work has been carried out over Hie entire length, the power graders doing approximately 850 miles of singlo cut grading. Lorries delivered maintenance metal on various sections. The VVhakaki lagoon was let out on duly 26, taking the Hood water from the lowlying stretches of the highway in the Tuhara section. The highway generally is in fair order.

‘•Wairoa-Gisborne, via liangaroa, main highway : General surface work has been carried out over the entire length and grading by power graders has been carried out on the Frasertown section, the graders doing approximately 200 miles of single cut grading. Maintenance metal was delivered on the Frasertou n and Ruakituri sections.

“Ruakituri Valley (Te Reinga to Mills’) main highway: General surface work, clearing slips and water tables, has been carried out by the surfacemen. The highway is in fair order. “Waikatea road: Tenders have been called for the formation of 1 mile 21 chains. —Waimana road: Plans of the Boggy Creek culvert. Plans have been returned approved by the Public Works Department —Plans for tho renewal of tlie Mangatawa bridge on the WairoaGisborne road are in hand.”
