■ (By “Yvonne.”) Miss Phyllis O’Meara, who has been spending a holiday at home in Gisborne, resumed nursing in the Auckland Hospital last week. Miss M. Douglas is the guest of Miss J. Gardner at “Awatea,” Mr. I. Meldrum is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. E. E. Brown this week. Mr. and Mrs Durham Russell were visitors to town last week. Mr. and Mra J. B. Williams, who were visitors to Wellington and Palmerston North, have returned home. Miss E. Brooke-Taylor is the guest of relatives in Hastings. Miss J. Anderson, of Wanganui, and Miss N. Hassells, of Hawke’s Bay, are the guests of Miss J. Graham. Mrs Brown is the guest of her grand-daughter, Mrs M. L. Holden, Pouawa.

Mr. and Mrs. J. Allen, of Gisborne, were recent visitors to Wanganui. A wedding of widespread interest was celebrated at St. John’s Church, Tanoatua, on July 18, the contracting parties being Jessie Esme Ball, the ’youngest daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. G. Ball, of Tanea'tua, and Eric McGougan, second son of Mr. and Mrs. S. MeGougan, also of Tancatua. The Rev. Father Smears ofiiciatcd, and the church was prettily decorated for the occasion. The bride was given away by her father, and the bridegroom was attended by Mr. Roy MeGougan, of Wlmtatutu, Gisborne, as best man, and Mr. W. Armstrong, of Whakatanc, as groomsman. , Mrs. A. H. Nome, formerly of Gisborne, has been elected president of -the Greytown Presbyterian Ladies’ •Guild. The Earl of Liverpool, for a long period Governor of New Zealand, and the Countess of Liverpool, intend pay-, ing a .visit to New Zealand next summer, and will leave England about December. “That member must be a married man—ho-knows how to deal with the ladies,” remarked Sir Heaton Rhodes at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Horticultural Society when a number expressed a hope that the ladies of the society would elect the Ladies’ Committee. “For,” he added, “if the ladies select the Ladies’ Committee they will be satisfied; but if the men appoint them, they won’t. ’ ’ A number of citizens tendered an enthusiastic reception to the visiting Irish tenor, Mr. Alfred O’Shea, Miss C. TOLAGA BAY GOLF CLUB’S BALL Ou Friday night the Toligi Bay Golf Club held their annual ball in Reynolds’ Hall, and the guests included many people of the district and visitors from Tokomaru Bay and Gisborne. The ball was voted most enjoyable, and those present, expressed their appreciation of the capable committee, which included Mesdames Morrall, Kent, Patlterson, Misses Harding and Reed, and Messrs Patterson, Hurlstone, Slipper, Kent and C. E. Smith. The hall was most attractively decorated for the occasion, native foliage and uikau palms, transforming the walls, while from the ceiling .hung streamers of colored paper. The stage was furnished with comfortable chairs and backed with greenery. A delicious supper was served in the supper-room, where the long tables were offset with bowls of golden wattle and watsonia. j

C, Davies, R.N., eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. John [Marshall Davies, of The Barn, Carrickfcrgus, County Antrim, Ireland, Mrs. Palmer entertained a large number of guests at the Mayfair Hotel. The honeymoon is being spoilt on a motor tour in France.
