COMPASSIONATE GRANT

COOK COUNTY ENGINEER PROGRESS OF NEGOTIATIONS Negotiations have been going <:>n for some time between the Cook County Council and the Department of Internal A Hairs in connection with tho council’s proposal to make a compassionate allowance of £6OO to the widow of the council's late engineer, Mr. J. J. Keane. Details of the proposal have been forwarded to the department-, which, however, desired fuller information, and on July 17 the under-secretary wrote asking if the £6OO it, was proposed to pay Mrs. Keane was in addition to the amount of the £IOOO insurance that had been paid out. “ I Would add that the approving of proposals of this nature is a matter within the discretion of the Government, and that in order to enable it to give a decision it is necessary that the lull facts of the particular ease should be made, known when application is made.”

'When the council met to-day the following ictter was authorised to be sent to the under-secretary : " In reference to the amount- of £IOOO already paid by the insurance company, I wish to say that the same was paid to the Public Trustee, who is acting oil behalf of Airs. Keane. . . . The

proposed payment of £6OO is in addition to the insurance money, and is looked on by the council as a tangible recognition of the services rendered by Mr. Keane. During the whole of his service with ihe enunril covering 20 years, Mr. Keane always gave his best, but particularly during tlie last three years Ids labors were unremitting, hours nol being counted. In this way he has saved the council many hundreds of pounds, and his tactful dealings with all with whom he came in contact in the carrying out of his duties overcame main of the difficult situations which so often arise. . . . The manner in

which Mr. Keane always proved himself able and ready to meet every call upon him and to go so far beyond what was expected, of him is one ol the greatest factors in the desire now put forward by my council.” Mention was also made of the arrangements made by the late Mr. Keane in the expenditure of the £153,000 loan, and that the necessary preparation for these large works was in addition to his regular duties,
