PROPOSED UNION
AUSTRIA AND GERMANY WIDESPREAD SUPPORT (Australian and N.Z. Press Association. (Received July 25, 10 a.m.) BERLIN, July 23. A movement for an Austio-uerman union is rapidly gaining impetus. Statesmen of both countries have long paved the way through co-operation of social and industrial questions, the unification of penal coda*, and railway regulations, but the movement lias recently gathered speed and weight. Both the Chancellor and the President of the Reichstag belong to the Socialist Party, which especially favors an Austro German union, because the Socialist element in Austria is powerful. Speeches at the Schubert festival in Vienna produced a resounding echo m all political circles in Germany. Newspapers of every political complexion report the proceedings with pride. Even the Nationalist Allgcmeine Zeitung rejoices that the influence of German music caused thousands of Austrians and Germans’ to avow allegiance to a United Germany.
