A TREATY WAR
NEW CHINESE PROBLEM DISPUTE WITH ITALY (United Service.) SHANGHAI, July 23. The Chinese treaty war is now definitely in progress. The Italian ConsulGeneral, Signor Galanti, to-day issued a statement announcing that it is- well that everyone in China should know that the Sino'-italian treaty has not lapsed in consequence of the illegal unilateral declaration by the Nanking Government, and the Italian Government reserves the right to adopt such measures, as'it deems opportune in the case of a violation of the treaty, though naturally the Italian Government is ready to meet the Chinese desires for treaty revision. Fighting broke out on Sunday night at Chefoo, when General Dzung DjinKao, formerly commander of C'hang.-Uhung-Chang's bodyguard, recently posing as Nationalists', attacked the forces under Colonel Sze at midnight, continuing firing till 4 o'clock-in the-mornin'g, isolating Consular Hill. In an attempt to establish communication between the Consulates and foreign warships, an American sailor was wounded in the hand by a stray bullet to-day. Ueneray Dzung. on posters, announced that be is acting under the orders of Chaug-Chung-C'liang, who is expected in Cheloo in a few days.
The American' Consul demanded an investigation by the Chinese authorities, while the British and Japanese Consuls demanded naval protection.
