A message from St. John (Newfoundlaud) states that tho Premier, Mr. Vv. S. Munroe, unofficially intimates his intention of retiring from politics before the election, which is due in November. The London Daily Telegraph says it has excellent authority for staling that the Archbishopric of Canterbury will be offered to Dr. Lang, Archbishop oi York, who is willing to accept. An official announcement is expected shortly.

Messrs. J. K. Kirk. J. S. Wauchop, G. McKay, and G. A. Maddison, who were recently re-elected unopposed to their seats on the Hawke's Ray Education Hoard, were congratulated by the chairman, Air .1. Clark Thomson, at the meeting of the hoard on Friday.

Advice has been received by the rector of Ihe Cawthron Institute that Sir John Russell's New Zealand itinerary has been provisionally arranged. lie will arrive in Neison tin August fl. and deliver the Cawthron lecture in the evening of the same day. On (.lie following day he will visit, places of agricultural interest in the Nelson district and on August 9 proceed to Blenheim and •Marlborough. Sir' John Russell is Director of Rothamsted, tho oldest and most important agricultural research station in the British Empire. He wishes to see as much as possible of New Zealand agriculture during the lime at his disposal.
