HOCKEY
TWO DRAWN GAMES Two drawn games of hockey in neither of which was any score recorded, were played at the Childers road reserve on Saturday afternoon, when the ladies' competition was continued. The weather conditions were unpleasant, but the turf was in good order. Some of the players, however, found it difficult to keep to the perpendicular on account of the absence of sprigs in their shoes, and possibly the association will consider advising aspirants for inclusion in representative teams of the necessity of fitting their playing shoos with sprigs before they will be considered for selection, for a player who cannot adapt herself to a wet ground is useless in a representative team, no matter how good her performances are in ideal conditions.
Easily the 'best ladies' game seen in Gisborne this season was that between High School and Old Girls, ,the exhibition delighting the spectators. Judging by the form displayed in this match, there are better prospects of selecting a formidable representative team than there were a short time ago. Many of the Old Girls' attacks came from the right wing, where Miss It. McCarthy was doing some good work and centring well. Against her in High School's left fullback position was Miss M. Campbell, who also played a sound game. High School's shooting was inaccurate, and on one occasion a shot at an empty goal went wide. Others for the High-School side to attract attention were Misses L. Burns, P. Patterson, and E. Hacche, and in the Old Girls' team Misses M. Miller, R. Benson and h Robinson were the best. The Pnha-Kia Toa game was a disappointment, neither team showing its best form. Combination among both sets of forwards was lacking. On the Kia Toa side the outstanding players were Mrs. Algie, Miss K. Pohatu, in the 'backs, and Miss M. Nikora in the halves. On the Puha side, Mrs. Sefton, in goal, Miss J. Robertson, in the halves, and Misses D. and M. Graham, in the forwards, gave the best displays. SINGLE CUP CHALLENGE MATCH FOR, LADIES Further communication with the Wairoa sub-Association has revealed the fact that their challenge for the Single Cup and badges is against a ladies' team, and not, as had been suggested, against "a men's team. A careful study of the rules shows that under the circumstances a challenge per medium of a ladies' match is permissable. No doubt the matter will be discussed at this evening's meeting of the executive. LADIES' TOUR Writing in the Napier Telegraph with regard to tho proposal of the Poverty Bay Association to send a team on tour, "Goalie" expresses a hope that |he Hawke's Bay Association .will be able to arrange a. match with the touring team either on a Saturday or a Wednesday. "These seem to* bo the only days,'' ho adds, "wlien we could put a team in the field against them; any other day seems to be out of the question." A southern tour for a Poverty Bayladies ' team has been proposed, but. so far no details have been arranged. At last week's meeting of the executive it was decided to first arrange for the Lady Carroll Shield match, after which negotiations would be entered into with the- Hawke's Bay Association.
