G.R.C. STEEPLECHASE MEET ACCEPTANCES SET RECORD Acceptances lor the first day's events at the .Gisborne Pacing Club's steeplechase' meeting closed last, evening, and expectations were fulfilled when it was discovered that a new record for the club had been set by the number of horses accepted for. Wellington and Auckland owners and trainers have sent representatives, and many stables in oilier centres will have runners at the Gisborne meeting. Two of the racps will have to be run in divisions, in consequence of the numerical strength of the fields. The total number of visiting horses is 34, and the quality of most of the visitors in well above the average. The races which will have to be run in divisions are the Maiden ' race and the Hack Flat Handicap, with 22 and 24 acceptors respectively. In view of the fact that these races are divided, the programme will consist of nine heats on the first day. One result of the good acceptances for these events has been a decision on the part of the club committee to increase the stake money for each rare by £SO, so that the Maiden race is now" worth £l6O, and the Hack Flat Handicap £IBO. There is no doubt that the close finish of the jockeys' premiership competition i.- responsible for a number of the bolter class of horses being sent to Gisborne from outside stables. R. Heed is now one winning ride behind T- Green, whose score to date is 73 sucecesses, and there is a third contestant, in A. E. Ellis, who may conceivably pull off enough wins at the Gisborne meeting to snatch the lead; among these three the conpetition has been very keen, and their patrons are anxious to give them every chance to make a clearcut decision at the Gisborne meeting, which is the last of the racing year. Besides Reed, Green, and probably'Wilis, there are a number of other well-known riders who will visit Gisborne for the meeting. Horses already arrived from outside centres include Rahepoto, Bahadur and Daveni. from Auckland; Ballyfanion, Jen, Nightwiteh, Dreamy, Handy, Bendower .Progressor, Pale Star, and Dishonored, from Hawke's Bay.
